Marsh Planting at Morris Landing

Marsh Planting at Morris Landing

Thursday, June 13, 2024 (12:00 PM - 2:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Join our efforts to safeguard coastal wetlands by participating in our marsh grass planting event at Morris Landing Clean Water Preserve, nestled in the heart of the thriving shellfish growing areas of Stump Sound. Volunteers will plant plugs of native salt marsh grass, in part with ongoing salt marsh and oyster habitat restoration initiatives through the living shoreline projects along Stump Sound. These wetlands serve as essential fish nursery areas, act as buffers against storms, and enhance water quality. Additionally, they are significant economic assets, providing jobs to coastal communities. Beyond their tangible benefits, wetlands hold a special place in the identity of our coastal communities. No special skills or knowledge are required to participate. Basic training will be provided onsite. Volunteers should bring a reusable water bottle, hat, and sunglasses, and dress appropriately for the weather in comfortable attire that can get dirty. Closed-toed shoes are required. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. All project supplies, equipment, snacks, and refreshments will be provided. Restroom facilities and parking are available onsite. This project is made possible through the generous support of our members, NOAA, the Landfall Foundation, and through state appropriated funding for coastal restoration from NC’s Department of Environmental Quality.
