Wetland Planting at Carolina Beach State Park

Wetland Planting at Carolina Beach State Park

Tuesday, June 18, 2024 (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Volunteers are needed to assist the North Carolina Coastal Federation in planting thousands of wetland plants, in collaboration with NC State Parks and Backwater Environmental. These wetlands play a pivotal role in the health and resilience of North Carolina’s coast. They serve as natural buffers against storms, filtering pollutants, providing habitat for diverse wildlife, and supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities. Currently, a 13.5-acre area of highly disturbed tidal marsh habitat, overrun by early successional invasive species like Phragmites, needs our attention. Volunteer help is essential in revitalizing these crucial ecosystems. Please be prepared for physically demanding work in muddy, wet, and potentially hot and humid conditions. No prior experience is necessary as basic training will be provided. All necessary project supplies and equipment, as well as snacks and refreshments, will be provided on-site. Restroom facilities and parking are available. This wetland restoration project at Carolina Beach State Park is made possible through funding from the Natural Resource Damage Assessment Trustees: NFWF, NOAA, USFWS, and NCDEQ. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our partners at the NC Department of Parks and Recreation, Mellow Marsh for the cultivation and care of wetland plants, and the dedicated staff at Carolina Beach State Park for their invaluable support in this endeavor.
