Ask the Expert: Coastal Insurance tips from a Coastal Native

Meet Shannon Boney, co-owner of Paradise Point Insurance, sharing important insurance information

Shannon Boney is the co-owner of Paradise Point Insurance. Shannon and her business partner, Hilal  Isbell, started Paradise Point Insurance in 2024 to help clients understand the why and how of covering valuable assets.

Shannon has worked in the insurance industry for more than 20 years. A native of Coastal Carolina, she understands the insurance challenges and needs.

“I feel fortunate to have grown up in a coastal community,” said Shannon. “Our insurance needs are different than someone living in portions of North Carolina, or coastal properties in other states. North Carolina in general, has different insurance regulations than most state.”

“I have always been an advocate, a teacher, who explains insurance coverage so that our clients can make an educated decision,” said Shannon.

Shannon specializes in personal lines, offering customers insurance for home, auto, boat, motorcycle, residential, recreational vehicles, flood, wind, special events and rental properties, and more.

“Hilal has a vast knowledge of the business lines of insurance,” said Shannon. “He specializes in meeting business insurance needs, such contractors, artisan tradesmen, workers compensation, general liability, and coverage for unique businesses like restaurants and bars, and so much more.”

Before starting Paradise Point Insurance, Shannon and Hilal worked together for a different insurance company. They decided to open their own company so they could broker insurance policies that fit a client’s needs.

“We care about individuals,” said Shannon. “We recommend reviews of coverage because insurance is changing. Our clients’ needs will change. We’re there so they aren’t paying for coverage they will never need.”

We asked Shannon to provide our readers with useful tips about insurance.

Personal lines-

Why is my agent the most important part of my insurance process?

Finding & working with an agent who is knowledgeable in Coastal NC insurance regulations & coverage is imperative. Find an agent who will not only advise you of your coverage options & answer any questions you may have, but also, be an advocate for you when/if needed.

What should I do in a claim situation?

Always call your agent BEFORE filing a claim with the carrier. To answer a question as simple as your deductible, the carrier will open a claim to have a place to put their notes. This WILL affect your premium if/when shopping your renewal! "zero payout claims" count!

What should I look for regarding flood zones when purchasing/building a home?

Be aware of the flood zone. ALL properties are in a flood zone! It's just a matter of what zone the risk falls under. X being the lowest risk and VE being the highest risk. CBRA areas are VERY difficult to cover & expensive when possible to cover in compliance with mortgage requirements.

What should I look for in a home that is not new construction to help my insurance premium be the most comparable?

Roof age- although it may be deemed a 30-year roof it will be difficult to cover on insurance after 20 years. Most carriers depreciate a larger percentage each year the roof ages.

Year built- if the home was built 2007 or newer the carrier may give you a discount due to the building codes changing in 2006. They know homes built past that date are built to a higher code requirement.

Business Lines-

What types of business insurance do I need based on my industry and location?

  • Every business has unique risks, so understanding the types of coverage that apply specifically to your business operations is crucial. Ask the insurance agent to help identify the essential policies, whether it’s general liability, professional liability, workers' compensation, or specialized coverage based on your industry (e.g., technology, retail, or construction).

Does my policy cover both property damage and liability for third-party claims?

  • Clarify the scope of coverage for your physical assets (buildings, equipment, inventory) and liabilities for accidents, injuries, or damage caused to others by your business. Ensure you understand the differences between property insurance and liability coverage.

Are there any exclusions or gaps in coverage that I should be aware of?

  • Ask the insurance agent about common exclusions, such as flood or earthquake coverage, and discuss any potential gaps. Knowing what’s not covered will help you determine if you need additional policies or endorsements to ensure comprehensive protection.

How can I ensure my business is covered in case of a cyberattack or data breach?

  • In the digital age, data breaches and cyberattacks are increasing concerns. Ask the agent if cyber liability insurance is a necessary addition to your policy, especially if your business handles sensitive customer data or relies on technology for operations.

What options do I have for workers' compensation and employee coverage, and how do they work?

  • If you plan to hire employees, workers' compensation insurance is typically mandatory. Ask the agent about the requirements in your state and what coverage options you have for employee health, accidents, and other workplace risks.
