PENDER COUNTY, NC - The Burgaw Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Topsail Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism agree that Pender County is a diverse and beautiful county to work, live, and play.

Starting this month, the two chambers of commerce will accept applications for Leadership Pender, a program designed to familiarize attendees with the county’s educational system, history and culture, economic development, the non-profit sector, public safety, governments, healthcare, and workforce development.

“Chambers across North Carolina and the United States conduct leadership programs,” said Michele Bennett, a Topsail Chamber board member. “The inaugural Leadership Pender class was a success. Our alumni felt the sessions gave them a deeper understanding of the county.”

“We’re pleased to open the application process for the second Leadership Pender class, which begins in August,” said Ruth Glaser, a board member with the Burgaw Chamber. “Our community is growing, and this program will deliver an understanding of the county in which we live and/or work.”

Applications for the 2026-2027 class are available now, online from the chambers’ websites. 

Classmates will begin with an orientation and mixer in August. Each following month, the class will meet on the second Wednesday to explore facets of Pender County. In May 2027, the class will graduate in a ceremony with family, co-workers, and friends in attendance.

To cover expenses, tuition is $400 per person. Businesses are encouraged to sponsor employees.  The deadline for applying is June 11.

“Pender County has a unique history, rich natural resources, and a diverse range of industry and small businesses,” added Glaser. “Leadership Pender will acquaint the class with all aspects of Pender County.”

“Class size will be limited,” said Bennett. “We encourage all to apply who will make the eight-month commitment.”
